William Krisel The Coronado Shores Godfather

William Krisel was a visionary American architect whose work transformed the look and accessibility of modernist design in postwar Southern California. Born in Shanghai in 1924 to American parents, Krisel moved to Beverly Hills in 1937 and later served as an army intelligence officer and interpreter in World War II before graduating from the University of Southern California’s architecture program in 1949.

Krisel’s early career was defined by his partnership with Dan Palmer, forming the influential firm Palmer & Krisel. Together, they pioneered affordable modern homes by introducing innovative uses of post-and-beam construction, open floor plans, and dramatic rooflines like the butterfly roof, most notably in Palm Springs, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Their designs for the Alexander Construction Company helped double the size of Palm Springs and set the standard for Midcentury Modern homes that embraced indoor-outdoor living, natural light, and flexible living spaces.

Over his five-decade career, Krisel designed or influenced over 40,000 residences, seamlessly blending form and function in single-family homes, condos, high-rises, and commercial spaces. His work is celebrated for making modern design accessible to the masses—bringing elegance and efficiency to everyday American neighborhoods. Among his key projects are the Twin Palms tract in Palm Springs, the iconic Del Prado condominium tower, and the soaring towers of Coronado Shores in San Diego.

Krisel’s legacy as a champion of modernism endures in publications, museums, and the communities he helped shape, leaving a blueprint for stylish, practical, and optimistic American living
