Construction of The Coronado Shores! 

The Hotel del Coronado, affectionately known as “The Del,” is a historic beachfront marvel on Coronado Island, California, and one of the nation’s most iconic hotels. Construction began in March 1887 on what was then a sandspit inhabited by jackrabbits and coyotes. Conceived by entrepreneurs Elisha Babcock Jr. and Hampton L. Story, the vision was to create a grand resort that would rival any on the west coast, a dream realized with the help of architect James Reid of the Reid Brothers firm. To overcome challenges like the absence of local lumber and skilled labor, they secured exclusive contracts with lumber companies in Northern California and employed many Chinese immigrant workers, building planing mills, kilns, and metal shops on-site to complete the necessary materials. This massive effort was accomplished in just eleven months, an engineering feat at the time.​

Opening in 1888, the hotel featured 399 rooms and was one of the largest wooden structures in the United States, equipped with cutting-edge technology such as electric lighting, indoor plumbing, and oil-heated furnaces. The grand Victorian Queen Anne-style design, characterized by its red turrets and expansive wooden porches, created a stately elegance that still captivates visitors today. Amenities included an Olympic-sized saltwater pool, tennis courts, a Japanese tea garden, an ostrich farm, and even a private railway system to transport guests. Despite its grand opening, the hotel faced financial difficulties due to a real estate bust shortly thereafter and was eventually purchased by John D. Spreckels, who expanded its popularity and helped sustain it as a landmark destination.​
