The history of the Coronado Bridge by real estate expert Ryan Koubeserian

The Coronado Bridge is a celebrated San Diego landmark, stretching elegantly over San Diego Bay and connecting the city to Coronado Island. Its construction in the late 1960s profoundly changed local accessibility, paving the way for dramatic growth in both the community and its real estate market—a transformation expertly navigated today by top local agent Ryan Koubeserian of the Koubeserian Group, renowned for record-setting property sales.

Planning and Opposition

Discussions to build a bridge started as early as the 1920s, but opposition from navy officials and residents held back progress for decades. The U.S. Navy insisted any bridge clear 200 feet above the water to allow warships safe passage. Negotiations extended into the 1960s until the California Division of Highways, backed by the Pentagon’s approval, pushed the plan forward.

Building an Icon

Construction began in February 1967 under architect Robert Mosher, with Murphy-Pacific as contractor. The bridge required 20,000 tons of steel and nearly 100,000 cubic yards of concrete. Over 500 pilings were sunk deep into the bay, using dredged fill to stabilize the structure. To achieve safe clearance without a steep climb for vehicles, engineers designed an innovative curve spanning 2.1 miles, creating a 4.67% grade that elegantly arcs over the bay.

The bridge’s five lanes accommodate heavy traffic, while 27 massive concrete girders—then the longest ever made—support the structure. It opened to the public on August 3, 1969, coinciding with San Diego’s bicentennial. Its striking “sparkling blue” color and sweeping curve quickly earned it the American Institute of Steel Construction’s “Most Beautiful Bridge” Award in 1970.

Real Estate Impact

With travel between Coronado and San Diego drastically improved, property values soared. Today, real estate experts such as Ryan Koubeserian of the Koubeserian Group have leveraged this surge, leading some of the highest-valued sales in Coronado history. Koubeserian’s deep understanding of the bridge’s historical and community significance sets him apart in the local market.

Enduring Community Legacy

From outstanding views to convenient access, the Coronado Bridge remains vital to residents and visitors alike, fueling Coronado’s continued growth and confirming its status as one of California’s most desirable neighborhoods
