Discussions to build a bridge started as early as the 1920s, but opposition from navy officials and residents held back progress for decades. Over 500 pilings were sunk deep into the bay, using dredged fill to stabilize the structure. To achieve safe clearance without a steep climb for vehicles, engineers designed an innovative curve spanning 2.1 miles, creating a 4.67% grade that elegantly arcs over the bay.​

The bridge’s five lanes accommodate heavy traffic, while 27 massive concrete girders—then the longest ever made—support the structure. It opened to the public on August 3, 1969, coinciding with San Diego’s bicentennial. Its striking “sparkling blue” color and sweeping curve quickly earned it the American Institute of Steel Construction’s “Most Beautiful Bridge” Award in 1970.​
